Applied Materials is a winner in the energy category of the Wall Street Journal's 2008 Technology Innovation Awards, for developing "a better way to make solar panels," recognizing its SunFab production line's ability to manufacture extremely large solar-power panels using thin-film photovoltaic material. This allows customers to turn out solar panels more quickly and cheaply than traditional production methods, and is helping to drive down the cost of solar power so that it's more competitive with electricity from traditional sources.
